I have a 327 chevy small block I put a thumper cam in it now i can't get the timing right. Could it have something to do with the distributor?

I would assume it has everything to do with the distributor. You need to retime the distributor with the camshaft and rotating assembly to get the plug to fire at the correct time. What do you have the initial set at? What is the mechanical advance set to? If your not 100% sure on exactly whats going on under that distributor cap read this article..
