Timing 454 Chevy BB

I am installing a new distributor in my 454 Chevy BB and I am not sure of the correct procedure to time it. I think I have all the plug leads in the right order but I'm not sure just where to sit the distributor body or the rotor. The vacuum unit seems to foul the manifold so there aren't many places for it to go.

Place cylinder number one at TDC on the compression stroke, using the timing pointer to guide you exactly where tdc is, then drop the distributor in the hole, with the rotor pointing to where the #1 spark plug tower is. May have to make you a mark on the distibutor where that tower is at with the cap on, then take the cap off and then point the rotor to that mark and drop it in. That will get you close but you will have to adjust the timing a little bit after that.
