Timing Advancing by itself.....

Hey guys,
Quick question...My timing advance appears to be advancing itself, by itself...Sounds strange I know. Info- 72 Chevelle. 350, mild cam and bolt on's.
I adjusted the timing the other day to 16 degrees advance at a normal idle.
36 degrees total.

Driving around a for a couple days, and then out of no where, engine starts backfiring at WOT. Running like crap and so on.....
I check the timing again....and at idle its a 56 degrees advance!

I scratch my head.....re time it to the same specs above. Thinking that I didn't double check the hold down bolt on the dizzy.
I change the oil, valve cover gaskets. After I warm it up, i rev it up to 6000 RPM, comes back down to idle and then dies.
Wont start after that. A couple of strange smells, I thought I blew the motor. But.....It advanced itself again. So I brought it back to the above specs, (this afternoon) and I can tell when Im driving that the timing is changing again.

Any thoughts??

Thanks,
Mike

How old is the distributor? Some times the weights can get stuck, not allowing timing to return at idle. May just need a good cleaning and fresh springs.

Sometimes under load the distributor can move if the hold down clamp is not tight enough. Can you move the distributor by hand after the clamp is set? If so, it is probably moving around at high RPM.
