timing? carb? cam?

I have a 393 windsor stroker motor when the motor was built it ran fine.It has a victor jr intake holley 750 4150 hp series carb. My father had the car for about a year and when i got it back from him it didn't run quite right. It would cut out when you stood on the throttle... I tried to check the timing and to no avail still the same problem so i changed the distributor and new distributor gear. still the same problem. the plugs were also fouled and i re adjusted the carb to make it run right but it still seems to cut out when i stand on the throttle. I have not the faintest of ideas what could possibly be wrong with this motor. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Bill

well I guess i should have introduced myself first... My names Bill I have a 1966 Ford Ranchero with a 393 stroker windsor, it is tubbed, mustang II front end, disc brakes all the way around, ford 9" with 3.73 (3.79)gears and a detroit locker. other than that i can't tell you how it was built. but as far as the distributor gear goes it is a bronze distributor gear due to the cam being made out of kryptonite or whatever it's made out of. It was worn a little bit on one side. I'm gonna re jet and see if that fixes the problem also going to wire up the MSD6AL and new distributor but have to get a new gear first. I have to look through the paper work to see what the inside of the engine has....

Bill Does it Idle ok ? Many things can cause this! When the Engines off Look down the front carb venturie's push down on the accelerator pump actuator See if you have a steady squirt of gas if you dont The diafram is bad or the pump orifices plugged or the ball in the bowl is plugged or stuck open (you should see a steady stream of gas) for most of the pump travel right from closed throttle position to wide open! Another is a vacuum leak but if the car idles good I dought thats a cause. If the car was stored and not driven Gas will evaporate and gum the bowls Causing all kinds of problems! Im guessing you already checked this Or you wouldnt of pulled the distributor.

im with jester on this one, if your old man never touched the distributor or timing and you've already changed the plugs / wires then i would start looking at your air/fuel system

clean your carb outreal good, double check accelerator pump , make sure you dont have dead plug / somewhere.

also dielectric grease in plug boots is never a bad idea!

have you hooked up a vacuum guage and double checked your idle circuits?
