Hey guys, just took off the timing chain cover on my 76 monte 305. There was a piece of rubber along the bottom where the cover hits the oil pan. It looks shot and I want to make sure that I'll get a new one with a timing chain cover gasket or front seal gasket. Any ideas?...what is this strip of rubber called? It really looks like a weak link. Thanks, Adam
Just what it is Timing chain cover gasket. There is a gasket behind the cover to the block and then one that seals between the bottom of the cover and the oil pan. Just get a kit that has the seals for the timing chain cover and oil pan and most will inc. the water pump since you normally have to tak e that off too.
Here is a link to a KIT
You may want to try a one piece oil pan gasket. There is less chance of leaks and they are reusable. They have metal grommets in them so you can't overtighten.
