What makes them whine is the gears themselves. Instead of a timing chain going around 2 gears, you have 2 MORE gears doing what the chain does ... so now you have 4 gears, no chain, and all them teeth - hard metal against metal. No play.

The Jesel isn't a timing chain, but a belt - looks nice, but $800 chases me away.
