timing help again

Hey again, OK, so installed my accell vacuum advance can tonight. Also got the carb on as well.
Initial start up was fine, when i installed the VC can I simply removed the cap, the rotor, the 2 screws holding the vacuum can, slid the pin down till it was free, reinstalled the new one the same, reinstalled all. Start car, VC advance plugged for now, timing still the same at 26 initial, 36 total. Set idle, mixture screws etc. Still seems rich at idle, but figure I will hook up yje vacuum advance and see how it works. Timing now at 36* but doesn't fall off with rpm. Vacuum advance and total brings it to like 50 at 3000rpm. And timing pointer at balancer is now jumping around, let it idle down, its still showing 50*. Crack the throttle a few times and it comes back, but is erratic. Wth! The only thing that seemed out of place was I'm almost sure I heard a "crack" sound when trying to tighten down the cap at the rear hold down. Had music on so wasn't sure. If the cap has a small crack in it would this send the timing all over the place? Or did I disturb the weights somehow and not set them back in the right place. I didn't think I moved them at all. And they have less then 5000k on them and do look brand new.....so.....? Help? Were supposed to be headed to open night at the strip tommorow night and I need this running.
