Timing light only working towards distributor

Okk so he is a head scratcher we have been working on for about a week.

He is the problem, engines seems to run good, a little rough and has a back fire around. We put the timing light on the #1 wire it works near the distributor but not on the wire near the plug, tried it on 3, 5, and 7 same thing. You rev it up to about 2k+ it picks up down there according to the timing light.

Heres what weve done
-Changed timing light
-New wires
-Tried HEI and then a Mallory unilite
- disconnected tach
-new coil

Im out of ideas. Its like the ground to the motor or distributor to intake manifold is dirty I know that would bee very rare just out of ideas. Anyone have any thoughts?

Sounds to me like either a poor timing light connection to power or ground or the plug wires are shot/weak. Some lights have an arrow that should point toward the plug when attached to the wire, but I haven't ever hear of anyone having issue with that orientation.

Its a MAC timing light got it all hooked up right, gonna check the ground one more time on the light. I might just buy a new module for the unilite about out of things to try
