Timing mark vs key way on Harmonic Balancer

Ello all.

I removed my harmonic balancer (from my 350) and was looking at it and decided to compare it to a few others I had laying around. I have 6 H.B.s and noticed some have the timing mark lined up with key way and some don't. All the H.B.s are genuine GM. The H.B. I pulled off my 350 origianlly came off a 1966 327, it had the mark lined up with the key way and the H.B off my 454 has the mark lined up with the key way. However the original H.B. off my 350 has the mark off from the key way by about a half inch.

Can someone tell me how it's supposed to be?

Different years used different timing pointer locations (on the timing cover)... Alot of the old ESC (early carb/computer) setups used a timing pointer that was read from directly above the water pump area or what would be the 12 O-clock position... Also different diameter balancers had different pointers... The best is the aftermarket billet types that are adjustable so you can set true TDC via a dial indicator but it also helps if the crank has been indexed (all throws of the rod journals are in time and on center)...
