Some luck helps, hanging in there is part of the fix too. Here's a picture of a stop I made years ago out of a spark plug. I gutted the inside and epoxied a piece of metal rod into it, making sure it was tight to begin with. You don't want it getting knocked lose inside the cylinder. The contact rod is about and inch long, if I was to use it again I'd make it a little longer. Only turn the motor over until it touches, don't force anything.

I'll just add one thing - when using a piston stop, remove all the sparkplugs, so you aren't fighting against compression and can feel when the piston makes contact with the stop.
