Post Timing Marks

Another problem I need help with. The front cover of my new 350 has the timing tab set about the 2:00 position. The motor that I have in my truck at the present time has the timing tab set at about the 12:00 position. Will I have to replace the front cover or is there a bolt on tab available that will position the tab at 12:00?

I goofed I didn't check this before I installed the front cover. The tab on the new motor is a bolt on unit.

If you have the means to fab a new one, that would probably work best.....that is what I did. By the way, do I know you? You are from Lubbock right? I drive the 54 Stude Wagon.....

I don't think we know each other. I sent you an email. I actually live in Wolfforth, just outside of Lubbock.

The timing tab is usually in about the 2 o'clock position. Seems as though the water pump would be in the way if it was at the 12 o'clock position. There are adjustable tabs on the market, but they are adjustable only to a certain extent. Would recommend that you check your TDC and balancer/tab positioning real close as per previous posts. Have fun.

Normally the timing tab is at the 2:00 position but around '82 the timing tab is at the top. Timing has to be set by aiming the timing light behind the water pump. At the 2:00 position the powersteering pump and A/C compressor are in the way.

I did varify the timingand have it marked.

The tab is at TDC. So find TDC with a piston stop and mark this location on your harmonic balancer. This is the location of your timing tab. It can go nowhere else.

Like I stated in an ealier post, the '82 had the timing tab at 12:00 and the time markes were viewed between the water pump and the front cover. I realize TDC can be placed anywhere on the balancer but if I put it a the 2:00 position I won't be able to see the tab to time the engine due to the powersteering pump and the A/C compressor are in that area.
