timing on a new 383 stroker

What do you set the timing on a chevy 1996 383 stroker. I have always set it at 0 degrees and the computer took over from there. Now all I get is code 42 est timing error. The motor is set up with a crankshaft sensor which is not being used in my 1995 Suburban. I got a chip from TBI chips to take care of it. It worked well for a few days and then the computer died overnight. New computer and new code 42. Poor idle and performance.

Are you using the stock computor with a cam? If so then the cam is causing problems with the computor. Do you have the right distributor? I think its a fuel problem.

I am using the stock computer with a prom chip designed for this engine, it ran great for 4 days then this. The engine is a GM Performance Parts engine for a 1996 or newer engine. That is why I had to use a 1995 distributor and a chip change to run this engine.

Hmm. I would double check the timing. You have to unplug some wire though before you set the timing to 0 or else it retards it a lot. Disconnect the wire, set timing to 0, reconnect wire, then start it up and see what happens.

Thats pretty much what I thought, I must have an electrical problem. Just will have to track it down. Thanks for confirming my guess.

\The brown and black striped wire behind the glove box. Some people refer to it as the pill wire (I don't know why).

Yep that sounds like it. Unplug that, set at 0, then plug it back in.

The pill wire is where you can tap into to add a few extra goodies if you want to. JMO

Thanks for the confirmation on the timing. I did all that and the truck wont stay running, I think the chip I bought may be faulty. It ran great for 4 days and suddenly went to hell. I did have a code 51 prom, I put in another new computer and now all I get is code 42 ignition spark timing.
