Timing pointers

Hello,

Looking for a little help here! I'm in the process of finishing my sbc 383 I have a cast aluminum timing cover and cant seem to find a timing pointer that will not cover the balancer so you can read timing marks or one that will fit behind it . Anyone ever have this problem? Thanks for the help

One way around this is to either make or buy a timing tape, or use a damper that has the degrees marked on the circumference. Using that, all the pointer needs to be is just that- a simple, narrow pointer set to indicate TDC. Determining TDC will allow you to be sure the pointer and timing tape or degreed damper are correctly indicating TDC.

Then the timing is read from the damper, not a timing tab. This is also helpful when setting total timing and when setting the valves.

timing pointer

Ok my balancer has the degree marks in it but the pointer I have mounts behind the balancer and won't fit between the timing cover and the balancer and the cheaper one I purchased mounts one hole above the balancer and covers all the marks.

What brand of timing cover and damper are you using?

You might not be able to buy the exact pointer that is needed, although w/as many different makers of such things I'd have thought someone would have one suitable for you to use. If not, you may need to make one.

If none of the above trip your trigger, here is a link to about 56 adjustable timing pointers (also from Summit but should be available at any good auto parts store)

I just had to go through the same thing. I was using an RPC cover "same as the G6300W from Summit", and stock balancer. The cheap pointers will not work. I ended up going with a SUM-163800 and I'll probably have to shave the back off a bit to make the timing tape visible. Good luck.
