I have a 67 Camaro with a stock 275 HP 327. It has a Pertronix distributor in it and the timing is currently set at 15 degrees. If I move it back to 8 to 10 degrees or even 12, the car has a really hard time starting and also occasionally runs on after I shut it off. I can't get it to run properly below 15 degrees. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I suspect the outer ring on the harmonic damper has slipped in relation to the inner hub, rendering it incapable of being timed with a light. Please read this article I wrote for the wiki....... http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Basic_stuff_for_newbies
Techinspector,
Thanks for the quick reply, that makes alot of sense. I read your article (very informative) and I will try your method to find the true TDC. The car came factory with a 12 bolt 2:73 posi, which I replaced with a 3:55. I've been trying to squeeze a few more horses out of the car while still maintaining a stock appearance. Thanks again for the helpful info.
I bought a new balancer today, pulled the old one off and the timing marks were identical on both. Turns out my distributor was out 1 tooth ! Running fine now and timing is working in the 8 to 12 degree range.
