Exhaust leak?

Old timey trick was to dribble a little ATF in the carb, and and increase the engine speed and watch for smoke.

Have you put a vacuum gage on it and checked that all 8 plugs are firing? Where in Illinois are you?

Your vacuum reading should be steady. you probably have a vacuum leak, throttle shafts sucking air or maybe a burnt valve
