Timing question and cylinder head question..

Okay so i just rebuilt my dad's motor (1969 302..) Stock everything virtually except cam. It's .456 lift 268 duration so nothing crazy. I was curious whats a good point to just set the timing at? The motor runs as it is now but you can tell the timing's off so i was curious what a good point would be to set it at.. Also.. when i had the heads redone a while ago i asked the guy if he could replace the valve seats with hardened ones and he told me that in 69' they were already hardened and there was no need for a lead attitive.. Was he right or do you still need to add lead if the heads are 69'..?

Chevy or ford? I dunno about fords, but chevrolet didn`t install hardened valve seats until around 73 or so. This was due to lead being removed from gasoline around this time due to strict emissions.

Set the ignition timing using a a dial advance timing light. For your 302 with a "268" cam, set initial timing to about 12 to 16deg at idle. The mechanical timing should advance to a max of 32 to 36deg at high rpm. Vacuum advance should add 10 to 15 deg of vacuum timing at high vacuum part throttle cruise. (hiway cruising) .
