timing and starting problem

I have a 1978 trans am with a chevy small block 400 it is built im told 550hp i can get it running then i time it shut it off then to start it again i have to mess with the timing then time it all over again any help please?


Other problem same car is the starter i keep busting starters and fly wheels i found that the starter keeps coming loose i lock light it and still loose it turns over hard and slow iv tried a mini starter but with the headers it wont fit any help?

What is the initial timing set at? Race engine or street engine? High compression etc. Vacuum advance distributor, mechanical advance. Some of those answers may help people help you.
