Timing tab on top

Another question:
I have the heads off my 350 SBC and turned the motor over by hand until the no 1 piston is up. The timing mark on the 8" harmonic balancer is straight up and I can see part of and feel a timing tab on top. The water pump is above it.
Pardon my ignorance, but what's the trick in using a timing light and seeing the timing tab when the water pump is directly above the tab and obscures the tab from view?
Thanks

Chevys used a 12:00 O'Clock, a 2:00 O'clock and a 2:30 O'Clock timing position. You can change your timing position using a 2:00 or 2:30 tab and a timing tape on your damper. Follow this procedure, except with the heads off, use a piece of strap steel (1/4" X 1" works well) which bolts across the cylinder bore and has a bolt threaded through it to act as a piston stop.....

Scroll a little more than halfway down this page to "Positive Stop Method of finding T.D.C." to see the strap and bolt.....
