Trying to figure out all the different aspects of distributor timing.

What is intial timing, and how do you figure it out if you doint know it (89 model 302 by the way). Also, how would you adjust it?? Is that the timing that is set generally with a timing light at idle, with the vaccum advance disconnected? With no advance involved I assume that is the "initial" timing.

What about the centrifugal advance inside the dizzy, the weights and springs. Why would you adjust that? When does it come in? Too fast or to slow, and how would you figure it out.

And the Vaccum advance, can that come in too fast/slow? How do I adjust that?

And what is the reason for a lock up dizzy?

Oh, any good reading material on this subject?

Okie dokie, thanks fellas, I'll do some detailed reading tonight. My vehicle is an '84 Ford F-150 with an 89 302 that I put an intake and carb on. I wasn't so much searching for specifics for my truck, but general info and procedures.
