Post Tips for Determining Transmision Problem.

Hey guys. I have a 700r-4 in my car right now, However. It sucks *** . Here's whats going on, I'm looking for some steps to figuring out what is wrong with my Trany. I dont beleive it's been rebuilt, and beleive it's from an 86 Camaro. Here's what it's doing:. Shifts from 1st to 2nd fine, 2nd to 3rd, It has a hesatation i.e. If I hold the gas down when it's about to shift, I can rev the car up to 6000rpm, it's like I'm in Neutral for a second or two. The transmission wont catch 3rd until I take my foot off the gas and let the engine not rev up. I could literly sit there and pump the gas and it would never shift into third until I let the rpms come down to around 2500 - 3000. But it catches great when it decides to grab. 3rd - 4th. 4th gear isn't currently working. BUT, if I have the shifter in the OD posistion, and I'm in 3rd gear say the rpms are at 3500 (I'm driving on the highway). If I let off the gas, the car will come right down to about 1500. Then when I put the gas back on, the transmission wont grab until the rpms pick back up to 3000-3500. Again, it's like I'm in neutral. This problem goes away if I have the shifter in 3rd though, the car just slows down normally if I let off the gas then.

Anyways, sorry for the long confusing post.. But I really need some help with this one. Thanks a lot. BTW, I'll be doing some tests on it tommorow in school (Auto Tech Student). I just dont know what tests yet. Thanks.

REX.
