Tips on how to bend a stabilizer bar?
I' seen several recommendation on how to fit a junk yard stabilizer bar to modified cars. I have found on that probably will fit good on the IFS on my '34.
It is 3/4" thick. I just need to cold bend it a little to make the ends a little wider apart from each other, but how du I do it? Any suggestions? |

If you try to spread that thing with any kind of hydraulic jack you have to remember it is a spring and as such it will have to be over bent a great deal in order to end up where you want it. because of this you will be storing a tremendous amount of energy in that bar and this thing could cause some serious damage if the jack comes out of there suddenly, if you do this with a jack BE CAREFUL!!!

Thanks for the inputs. Yes I'm very aware of the danger.
We have a 20 ton manual, stationary hydraulic press at my job. Maybe I'll try somthing on that one. It presses very slowly and is easy to control. But I'm afraid the bar will just "pop off" to one or the other side. Kind of like when you try to straighten a bent steel nail by lying it a flat surface with the bend up and hit it with a hammer. Very often the nail only twist to one side instead of being bent back. It would have been better if I just found something to fasten the bar very good and use a long extention of some kind to make big force and bend it by hand. But I also could make some kind of jig to lock the bar from twisting in that press... |
