Excellent advice for anyone getting started, or setting up shop.
I can't express how important organization and cleanliness is in a shop environment!! Having a dedicated receptacle for trash, scrap metal, used oil or fluids, etc. is a must. And it's always easier to start out being organized, than to try to straighten up a massively cluttered shop.
My father has a 40x45 shop, with a 40 foot semi trailer attached to the side for storage. Until recently it had been so cluttered that there was maybe 100sq/ft of "walking space"- with 3 cars, 4 motorcycles, 4 large roll-around work tables, numerous tool boxes, and a multitude of parts, random crap, and trash (and a buddy had put all his tools/crap in there as well). Cleaning that shop is an ongoing project that could've been avoided if we had taken the time to organize from the beginning.
The use of shelving or cabinetry, work benches, and pegboard is great, IF things don't just get piled up there. Having designated spaces for cords and hoses, tools, spray cans and oil bottles, etc. should be thought of BEFORE it gets out of hand. A place for everything and everything in it's place!! That's the only way to maintain order- especially when working with limited space.
