I have had the opportunity to help lay out several shops and a couple of manufacturing facilities as well.

I found that the easiest way for a guy to get a handle on where stuff should go is to draw out the shop floor plan on a big piece of poster board to scale.
Then draw your equipment to scale on some different colored paper, cut the pieces out...then you can place stuff on your floor plan, moving it around if necessary, making sure you have walkways, working room and proper access to everything in the shop.

I used different colors for various levels, as I have a bunch of pallet racks and a mezzanine that has useable work areas under them.
