Tire Recommendation?

I am considering changing the drag radials on my chevelle due to no traction what so ever! I figured it would spin some, but geez! Anyway, I'll give you a basic run down of the car. It's a 69 chevelle full interior with a 496 dynoed at the flywheel 642hp/612tq Probably around 540rwhp (Guessing). Turbo 400/3,500 stall converter----4 link suspension---12 bolt with 4.10 gears. Right now it has a set of 275-40-17 Nitto555 drag radials on it. I was thinking of going with the Mickey Thompson E.T. Drag radials. It won't see the track much, but I would like it to hook when I do go! Good choice? What brand and size would you guys recommend with my set up? It has a good stance. I'm not sure how wide of a tire I could get up under the car. Any Thoughts? Would 275-40-17 M.T. be good enough?

I'm making substantial power with an 8-71 small block, back half 4-link 4:11 car, instead of using a drag radial or other dual purpose tire, I run 31x16x18.5 MT Sportsman Pros screwed inside and out. With a spragless T-400, Griner Brake, 3200 stall, normally at 13#'s, I 60' 1.4/1.5's all day on pump gas. I've never had the car on slicks.

I did'nt even think about the sportsman's. I guess I need to see what is the widest I can go with.

One thing you need to consider on the sportsman pros, unless a recent change, is they are bias ply. I wish they would make a radial. It would be much better for cars that are truly street strip. It can get ugly mixing bias and radial tires. That's why I haven't used them.
