TKO or T56

SO I am planning on building a new motor for my 65 merc comet. I plan on doing a 351W with fuel inject. with trick flow top end and roller cam. I was wondering if you guys think the T56 is worth the money? Or if I should just look into getting a TKO. I plan on around 400hp and 450ft lb of torque. SO that right there rules out a T5 which would be the cheapiest route. I want the five or six speed for the improved fuel mileage and low rpm at high speeds.

T56 is OK, but if there has been any hard driving, the T56 will have suffered. Very expensive to rebuild.
Got one in the shop now that needs 4th, 5th, 6th and reverse. Parts and labor have exceeded $1500.00 and there is more to find. Be careful!

Yeah, you can typically get a TKO complete setup for less than a T56, and who really needs a 0.5 double OD?

Or a ZF-S542. The rockcrawlers love 'em. Stock, they're rated for 500ft-lbs, and rebuilds are available for $1-1.5K. 5 sp, single OD, available in 2wd. Unfortunately, they come with that stupid concentric hydraulic clutch slave cylinder. Gotta be a way around it, though.

I'm with Curtis on this...the TKO 600 will definitely do the trick. You'll probably never have use for two overdrive ratios, especially 6th gear at .5!
The TKO 600 also has the option of two different gear ratios for the overdrive, either .82 or .64.
I just purchased a TKO 600 and went with the .64 OD ratio. Take at a look at McLeod Industries website. They sell the Tremec as well as bellhousings and clutches. Worth a look.
