Tools for welding test
Well, I was doing a search on required tools for a welding test and found hotrodders.com, so here I am. So the deal is with economy as bad as it is I need to be creative. On a recent job search in my area I found a welding opportunity. The problem being I haven't worked in the trade for a long time, once upon a time I was certified for welding pipe in all positions and was quite skilled at weld AL with MiG. The jobs for flux-core and requires a test, if I can get the test scheduled what tools do I need to bring?
Thx, Ray |

tools
Thanks for the responses, I understand I need the basics as far as hand tools go, but what about power tools like a grinder/ buffer, I still have a 4 1/2" angle grinder. Are the test pieces normally ground flat? Does the backing strip need to be cut off and ground and the cap welds also?

What test/certification are you going for? Flux core doesn't really tell us much.
If it is just for work then they may have most of the tools there except for a welding shield (autoshade if allowed)/gloves/etc. I would bring the basics with you like chipping hammer/wire brush, grinder with grinding and cutoff wheels if you are allowed. I would also bring a small hammer and a stamp kit \(just stamp you intials or ticket symbol) just to make sure it was your pieces going through the bender/xray if they will allow you. |

Well the test is described as a company test(in house).Flux core, 2G,3G,4G for structural welding. My assumption that it is a job for welding plate.

Is this test going to be bent or xrayed? Did the company give you a
procedure to follow? What kind of flux core are you going to be welding with? I would assume it would be a cold test as well, a cold test is the welding machine w/ or w/o a wire feed will be set to zero. I would suggest to go in a few minutes early and get a feel of the machine since you haven't welded in a while, if they allow you. I would advise you to check all your grounds, whips, settings inside the machine, if you are using dual-shield (gas and flux) I would double check the bottle and regulator also. |
