Tooo long of burnout??? Lower Gears???

I've got a 63 wagon with a small block, powerglide w/ 2400 stall, 3:08 gears with a open rearend. i'm in the low 14's with this setup and am having major traction problems. I was told were to put in lower gears(ex.3:73's) i wouldn't burnout as much, while still having the open rearend.

I'm going to the track this weekend and if i install lower gears and burnout more i'll wait to install them when i get positraction.
Any help is appreciated. Peace.

The lower gears will spin more. You can try to run lower tire pressure in the right side and move weight to the right rear of the car. My bet is that you'll need the posi. You might as well put the posi and the 3.73's in at the same time.

get the air bags that fit inside the springs and run more pressure on the right side this will help till you get the posi.

gearing has little to do with traction.
the more gear the more torque at the tires therefore they will break loose easier with less engine power.

if you had 308 and traction you would need way more power to get the car out of the hole and pull the car up to speed...

gears will help that ...but you need to dial in your suspension for traction.get your gears the do the suspension.

I have seen many drivers buy the set and not even install the left bag at all.
Just looking at a car launching off the line the front left picks up and plants more on the right rear.

By stiffening the right rear, you create a more even power distribution to both rear wheels, allowing a straighter more controlled launch situation.

Posi is the answer no posi no traction. That car will launch when you get posi installed. I have a 70' lemans with street tires and my 60 foot time is 1.955

Right now with 3.08 and no posi our 60 ft times are 1.995 to 1.999. Can I expect this to improve with the 3.73's or does everyone think I will spin more with out the posi?

Yes it is. p 215-70-r14 street radials. But thats when it only spins a small amount. We did have a 500 cfm Edelbrock on the 355 but we just changed to a 600 and added the 3.73's. Took it out in the country for a trial and with the new carb it pulls alot more in upper rpm's. And also is a lot snappier with the gears. We have found a posi rear end but have to wait till the guy gets the 9 inch under his Nova before he will sell it to us. we also have a set of Competition engineering traction bars to try but havent got them on yet. I am hoping we can get enough traction to get into the 13's the way it is before posi and traction bars. Do you think it will happen?

Well, went to track today. Did good got two third places but not so good on times. before we had run a best of 14.09 @ 96 with the 3.08's but with the 3.73's it spins all the way through first and the tire goes up in smoke. the best we could do babying it through first was 14.26. and that was satill spinning. Just cant seem to feather it enough to keep it from spining off the line. Our 60/ times went from 1.90's to a best of 2.30's. So I am pretty sure that traction is our problem now. Plans are to install the traction bars and maybe add a "locker" just for the weekend to race that I can borrow from a friend just to see what it will do. Thanks for the help everyone and we will keep you posted.
