torque converter question

Probably a previously asked question, but here it is. What are the tell tale signs that a torque convertor is going or already bad? I have a VERY mild 440 with a 727 in a Dart with 3.23's and the car just doesn't want to accelerate, vibrates badly in drive while at a stop, and makes a growling noise at low speeds around 5-20 mph. I've checked the u-joints and the converter bolts are tight (even put a torque wrench on them to make sure). The car revs, but just doesn't have have any get up and go lately. The car has only been on the road a little last year (with out problems) and this summer. Any thoughts guys?
Thanks
