Torque Converters: Do They Multiply Torque?

i have read a couple places on the internet and heard from a few people that when switching from a stock torque converter to a new torque converter, it multiplies your torque at a greater ratio, causing you to have more torque at the driveshaft. i would like to know if this is actually true and how much power is actually gained from the switch. also i was wondering how much it would effect the 1/4 mile time. thanks!

All Torque converters do multiply torque stock or after market and can multiply it up to 2.5x but only till the point of coupling. The main reason for higher stall converters is to allow the engine to get into its power band (which is usually higher on a more radical engine) before coupling occures.
