Torque-ing a crank pulley bolt

Howdy, Well I blew the budget and bought a March serpentine system for my LS1 engine in my 61 Impala. The first piece is a new insert on the crank pulley. All is good except I can't torque it to the 90lbs because the engine wants to turn over. No other pulleys are on, no belt, nada. So how do I keep the engine from turning? I have settings on my air gun from 1 - 4, are any of those 90lbs? Anyone know what the settings are rated?

Much and often thanks!

Have someone jamb the flywheel with a screwdriver.

Don't use the impact wrench, use a proper torque wrench. You can wedge the flywheel or use the factory flywheel retainer. I took a rusty crank pulley and welded a bar to it. Now I bolt this tool to the balancer and torque away.

One Man Operation

Hey LB, For one man cooperation, use a curved jaw vise grip, clamped on the flywheel. Position it so the jaws bite on the fywheel and the curved part just clamps real lightly on the teeth of the flywheel. Turn the engine till the vise grips jam against the bell housing. Tighten the crank bolt till you reach required torque. Done deal. olnolan
