Toyota Supra rear end, is it strong enough?
I have this complete Toyota Supra IRS rear end, very nice, independent suspension, disc brakes, LSD diferential, 3.72 ratio; the half shafts look pretty tough, has a pretty nice finned aluminum cover, I came off a circa 1990, 3.0 litre, I-6 DOHC engine car.
anybody knows how strong this toy is? would it survive the torque of a mild chevy 350? I would love using it on a hotrod, maybe a chevy II that is starting to grow plants at the back of my shop. Augusto. |
supra
the supra looks a lot like a jag rear end and the dohc 6 at the other end also looks jag. I would hesitate to use it behind a 350 ... You will be tempted to push it too hard. the supra would look neat in a t bucket with a small v 6, or the 60's GM mini v 8's (also used in Rovers. )

how about a stock 350, not too wide street tires, no drag racing, chevy II?

I wouldnt worry about it. I had one of those that made about 450hp and people have run up to 1000hp with a stock rear end.
|
dou you mean the supra rear end can take up the power of a V8?
I've seen V8 swaps into supras and datsun Z's |
You shouldnt have a problem at all since you have the 3.73 rear end. If you had the 4.10 rear end from the 1jz car it would blow up if you looked at it wrong.

this is good to know, thanks a lot

It will EASILY handle a mild v8.

i have a toyota supra rear end behind my 550 hp 440 and i have raced it for 6 years... it absolutely will handle a v8... supras can easilly be made to pump out 500hp...
|
good to know that, because I ended up installing it in the rear of my V8 mid engine buggy, it has a 350SBC, I estimate should be pumping like 380 hp or so, TH350 tranny, and since it's only tubes it should be very light, the only thing I don't like is the gear ratio, the buggy has 32 in tires and is gonna be a little too high ratio, the converter has only 1.800 rpm stall.
I have not found yet a 4.11 or higher 7.5in gear set for it. |
yeah i have a truck 4 speed in front of mine so the gear ratio is ok for me running 18's I have it and the supra front end under my 38 desoto coupe.. handles like a new vette
