Post TPI Installation

I'm thinking of breaking out of my "restification mode" and getting into newer (although 15 years old) technology. I've been checking out TPI systems on EBay. It appears that for the cost of Holley carb and an intake you can buy a fairly complete used TPI system. I do have concerns about things like the knock sensor. All of my blocks are '60s and '70s vintage without that feature.
This topic probably has been covered before, but I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone had experience in this area?

Ok. If you are going to convert your car to a TBI system you are best off buying a parts car for the tranaxation. Me and my dad baught a 87 suburban TBI 350 for 300 bucks with a fresh rebuild of the the tranny. my dad spend 225 for the tranny and I baught everything else. The TBI system is also an emmision thing. Those engines are tuned for emmisions. But i would still not recomend it. They are much more complicated, and the chance of them breaking down and not be-ing able to get it going again is much greater hten carburator but the benifits may out-weigh that

good lord what ever you do dont put a TBI system on, there dogs.


on the other hand TPI is pretty good but youll make your max power at 4500 rpms. So you have to build your motor to meet that. Or you can go with a Miniram which will take you to about 6 grand.


My best suggestion would be to get a doner car because your gonna have to get the harness and the computer.

You can retrofit a TPI system to an earlier engine fairly easily. Custom wiring harnesses are available to run with or without emmission systems. As for the knock sensor, you can run it with or without. It screws into the drain plug fitting on the right side of the block.

There is a wealth of parts to upgrade performance and a endless supply of information out there. I started with the Chevy shop manual.

its pretty simple. Its one of the easiest fuel injection systems out there to work with (besides Toilet bowl injection) and if your good with computers you can burn yourself some custom chips.

good system, be wary, i'm in the same boat,the type of cam is limited since the tbi system is vacum sensitive. a change in lift duration will cause a conflict with the tps and computer.

got an '87Vette TPI engine and trans in my '92 Silverado, has Street&Performance wiring and computer upgrade. Do yourself a favor, use S&P stuff, or someone at least as knowledgable, and you'll have no problems. S&P were the first and probably still the best with the TPI units..and anything else GM has built since..LT1,LS1,LT4, etc. When it comes to fuel injection, if Mark Campbell (owner of S&P) can't tell you what to do to make it run, you may as well junk it. He is literally on the phone for hours each day helping customers with their needs and wants. They do make a quality product,and have outstanding customer service, but they don't give away their parts..so if you are looking for the bargain basement price on these products, look somewhere else, you want find it at S&P.
