trannie and rear questions

First, i have a 68 olds with a 350. It currently has a 2 speed jetaway trannie which i am considering swapping for a th350 three speed. Is this a smart move? Are there any benefits to having a 2 speed or should i go ahead and swap for the turbo 350?
Next i have an extra rear end in my yard, i was told it was a 3.90.
It has a 12 bolt cover and when i turn one side the other side goes the other way, but when i turn the part where the drive shaf goes, they both go the same way. Is this a posi? Email me gilliganspl@aol.com

Turbo 350 is an excellent idea....

The 12 bolt is a non posi. Before changing it, take the cover off to determine what the ratio is.

Posi

Someone just told me that if i hold one side and try to turn the other and it wont move than it is a posi. Well i held one side, and the other wouldnt budge so i am now going to assume that this is a posi. Safe asumption?

What about, as you said in your 1st post................It has a 12 bolt cover and when i turn one side the other side goes the other way, but when i turn the part where the drive shaf goes, they both go the same way.

That is a non posi.........

Take the cover off and have a look. Wishing it was a posi, won't make it one..........

I was told since the rear end is of the car and there is no was of ensuring it would be in "neutral" you do it the grab and turn way. It makes sense to me being that a posi is both wheels turning together so theoreticly if one wont turn on a posi the other wouldnt either right? Anyway what do i look for to determine if it is posi or not when i take off the cover?

Also, any tips on re-vamping the rear? Thanks for all your help

Take the cover off....look at the little gears beside the big crown gear. There are 4 small gears meshed together. If there are just those gear there, it's an open rear. If there are other stuff, clutch plates etc, its a posi.

Count the number of teeth on the crown and pinion to determine the ratio.
