Tranny for 1971 C10 4x4 project

Hola Gents,

I have a 71 c10 4x4 with the original 12 bolt in it. I was posting on the 4x4 forums but those guys all just bicker and bi*ch at each other so I'm hoping to get some good info on what to do.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to run a big or a small block motor. If I run a big block ill do a 427 or a 454 block. If I do a small block im going to run a 383 stroker. Big block Id run a th 400 tran and small block either a 700 r4 or a th 350.

The tranny I'd like to do is a 4 speed like a 700 r4 tranny, but I keep hearing there terrible for 4x4's because they are weak. What would be a better suggestion so I don't kill myself in gas If I drive it on the freeway?

My main application isn't going to be mudding or anything. This truck I want to be able to drive around in and look good. I know right. But the next one I build will be the monster. I'll need this truck to tow the monster.

I was looking to run 3.73 gears to also keep fuel eco decent, but im open to suggestions. I don't know alot about rear ends etc etc. Im looking for a setup that will last and not leave me stranded in the boonies somewhere. Also any advice on tranny would be great also. Thanks!
