Tranny to cross member alignment issue

Hey everyone it's been a while but I have a question. I recently removed everything from the fire wall forward on my 67 Camaro. I did this to replace the motor and also replace some parts that I believe contributed to my vibration issues like a cross member from a BBC with a TH400 placing the drive line out of wack. So I order a cross member for a 67 Camaro with a 350 and a TH400 when the frame was out of the car I placed the new cross member on the frame to ensure all four bolt holes line up with the frame and cross member in the farthest set of bolt holes, they did. I also noticed the the old cross member tranny mount point was about 3/4" to the passenger side which confirmed BBC with a TH400. Any way all looked good I'm happy I replace all bushing and hardware check alignment and square all is good, off by less then a 16th anywhere. everything bolted in then I bolt the tranny to the motor lift it into the car bolt in the motor mount tighten down the cross member and in doing that I noticed the tranny mount was on the cross member and at the mounting point but hanging over by at least an inch. I measure the cross member tranny mount location and it is 2 1/8" long from the weld point on the cross member to the back of the mounting point. I look at the old cross member and measure that one and it is 3 1/8" long. The tranny is where it needs to be but I can not bolt it in place because of the short mount point will not allow the bolt holes on the tranny mount to sit right on the cross member tranny mount point. When I purchased this cross member for a 67 Camaro with a TH400 I assumed it would be good. So am I missing something here does anyone have any idea. If you need photos of the two cross members side by side I can post them in my photos section so you get a better understanding one is of the old cross member the other is of the new one installed in my car so you can see the tranny mount hanging off the end of the mount point. I'll go ahead and post the photo so you can see. Remember I measured for square seems good all the holes in the camaro body line up with the frame at the fire wall the measurements are good to within a 16th of an inch but even if I get that 16th it has nothing to do with the tranny mount location because the whole thing will move as a unit. So any help with this one would be greatly appreciated

re:tranny to c-m issues

Are you sure your eng is sitting right where it should be? 1" isnt that much really. If it truly is in right then It seems that for some reason the vehicles eng that you got the cross member from is, was sitting 1" forward of what your motor is. Could be a 1/2 yr model change happening to you that occasionaly happens. Check if there were any changes in motor mounts on that year. I recently had similar problems only to find my exaust mount bracket location had moved just enough to keep the motor from sliding all the way in. Made it W/ 1/2" clearance and some persuasion. Also now I have an extra crossmember or two. good luck.

KemoChevy

This is a complete swap out deal there is some history here with the car and why I'm doing this madness. good call on the motor mounts, the motor mounts are from Energy Suspension and the set I have on the car are the short and wide which are incorrect for my car model year so they sent me the 2 5/8" wide ones that are tall, these should work. On the wide and short mount I have on the car I noticed a 5/8" gap on both mounts the one on the drivers side the gap is closer to the firewall on the passenger side the gap is to the front of the car, weird. I just received the new mounts from Energy Suspension today and plan on installing them to see what happen. As for the model year early camaro like mine didn't come with a TH400 tranny they where for the impalas or BB cars, but the 67 firebird with the 400 engine did come with the TH400 tranny. I spoke with Jim who owns Heartbeatcity.com who in turn spoke to Rick who did owns Ricks First Generation and they informed me through Jim that in order to solve this issue I would need to find a cross member from a 67 fire bird with the 400 combo. I found out that finding a needle in a hay stack would probably take less time. Thanks for the input Kemochevy you are on the money and I appreciate the input a ton. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

crossmember blues

hey 67 camaro, have you thought of using a nova crossmember for your application, they are sub frame cars as well and some of them came with the th400 setup factory and would probably be easier to locate than b.o.p. stuff would, if im not mistaken the nova crossmember is the same width as is the rearend. hope this info may help you.

re: Tranny to cross member alignment issue

The only '68-'74 Novas with T-400s were big-block cars, and as such have the engine and trans offset to the right. Small-blocks got the T-350 if they got a 3-speed auto at all.

The holes in the Chevy T-400 unit can be modified to move the mounting point a little to the left for use with SBC motor mounts, if you don't mind grinding on it a bit.

Any idea how to tell the Pontiac crossmember from a Chevy?

re: Tranny to cross member alignment issue

I'm really not being a smart***, but I have recently installed a engine tranny combo for a customer who had the engine and tranny mounts in place, and had the tranny crossmember bolted in backwards!
