Tranny Decoding 71 vette

I have a 1971 vette with a four speed. It leaks like crazy so I going to by a rebuild kit with new seals. I need to know what kind of tranny I have. I think it is a Muncie M-21. Here are the numbers, on the tail shaft it has 3978764GM. On the passenger side of the tranny it has C115104014 (Luckily the last six match my vin) Then under this number is P1M318. Finally stamped on high on the side of the tranny is 3925661.

Any help/info is appreciated. Thank you!

Don't know about your numbers, but, where is it leaking from?

It leaks from the back and the front. Mainly the rear seal. I have it out during my engine transplant and figure it is a good time to go through it.

Hey poncho you from Onterio? Isn't that where the guys from dream car garage from? That is the BEST show on TV!! Thank you Canada for such a great show!!!!

The place where they film that show is about 5 miles from here. They just built a whole new building....that show must pay pretty well. A friend of my daughters paints for them.

The rear seal for your tranny is a common problem.

I could never live 5 miles from Hot Rod Heaven without peeking in every once in a while. Who am I kidding, My tounge would freeze to the window from drooling over the cars they have.

The last character in the number P1M318 is probably a "B" rather than an 8.

The letter B would indeed be correct for the M-21 close ratio tranny. Other codes would be "A" for the M-20 and "C" for the M-22.

In 71, this tranny was only availalble on the LT-1, LS-6 and the LS-5 without A/C.
