tranny identification

My son picked up a 700 r4 tranny for me up in Michigan. He paid $200
for it with the converter . It looks in good condition but who knows. I need to figure what year it is. The guy thought it was in the 80's The driver side has the number 8663549 stamp on it and a big H like a trademark or something. The passenger side has a big number 2 and MD8 also in big numbers. The tail piece has 8642547-3 Can anyone tell me what these numbers mean or a place that i can go and find out myself.

Just count the input shaft splines... If its 27 spline then its the older version 86 or earlier most likely... If its the big shaft 30 spline then its 87-88 or later up to 91-92...

I have a very informative writeup in the knowledge base on the TH700R4 transmission.
MD8 is the automatic overdrive transmission RPO number, nothing more.
Those other numbers are casting numbers, nothing more, and there is little or no information on those, as those particular parts were used for several years.

The identification stamping pad will tell all about the transmission in it's original form. If by some very odd chance the manufacturing identification decal is still attached and readable, this will also tell the original vehicle it was installed in, but there is little chance of this.
