tranny jerk

I have a question I've always been curious about. I have a 79' chevy truck with a TH400. When at a stand still after firing up my truck, When I shift to any gear from park, I get a pretty strong jerk from it. I've noticed this in alot of older vehicles I've been in. Is doesn't bother me, what causes this strong jerk in these older vehicles? Is it high torque? thanks in advance,
Mark

warn tranny and motor mounts can cause this. The tranny and engine is shifting causing the clunk.
Open your hood and watch the engine while someone shifts it for you. If you have more than a 1/4 inch of movement then you should probably check the mounts.
Good luck
Jake

How high is your idle speed set at?

What about the condition of your "U" joints?

Either of these can also cause that clunk.

I'm gonna check the motor mounts and u-joints. I do also hear a (ting) sound when shifting. Worn u-joint(s) most likely. Thanks everyone for the info.
