To answer your question about the 700r4 power usage. The power usage is simular to the TH350, but the 700 has many neat benefits that the 350 doesn't have. The 700R4 and the TH350 are cousins. They are in the same load class and even share some common parts. The 3.06:1 first gear on the 700 is great for getting off the line(350=2.52:1, 400=2.42:1, PG=1.74:1) and the 0.7:1 overdrive is ideal for mileage! The torque converter is a bit heavier because of the torque converter clutch, but the lower first gear easily over comes the extra converter weight. A stock high stall speed torque converter is available in some applications such as the IROC and some others. The 700s have been improved since coming out in 1982. I would look for one in the late 80s (87-89) A well built 700 with a few upgrades will take around the same HP that the 350 will, which is around 500HP.
