tranny ? not a usual car

So, I've got a not so usual project that I'm working on with a team. I attend CSU Chico and am on the Mini Baja West team. I have a question about what drivetrain to use.

As a group we build a mini-baja car that meets the requirements set forth by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and race other college teams from all over the country. Colleges that attend include Cal Poly, UCLA, San Diego State, Michigan State, ASU, and many others. Our website is http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/minibaja/ and you can see other teams, rules, etc. at www.sae.org under "Students and Competitions" and the under "Mini Baja West."

We need to make the car as light as possible and are limited to using only a completely stock Briggs and Stratton 10hp motor. We are running a full independant suspension. Our space limitation and knowledge leave us to only make it a 2wd and not 4wd. My main question is if anyone can help me out with ideas for a transmission. Our team has decided that it is important to have reverse with at least two forward gears. We have thought about using a tranny from a Mule, dirtbike tranny meshed with a reverse box, or a quad's tranny. Can anyone point me in a direction of something that would work?

In the link "OUR CAR", is that the one you are working on currently?

If not I like the variable pully for infinite "gearing" capabilities that the one in the pic happens to have.

From there you would have to only have a one speed gearbox with forward and reverse.

Are you limited to where you can procure the gearbox?, limited to how much cost involved?, limited to what it was originally used for?

A light duty version of what you are asking for would be an MTD lawn tractor Varadrive transaxle. The speed is determined by the tire size and input pully size. I used one in a pulling tractor for a season and was surprised it lasted as long as it did, I chipped a tooth on the ring gear and finally ended up beating on even harder after that.
When it finally stopped doing what it was designed for, I had a large bulge in the lower case when I heard the thump of the gear finally endind it's useful life in one peice.

Go here And you will find lots of choices..there is even a forward reverse gear box available should you desire that..

Have a good time..

Thanks for the replies and links guys. The car that is "OUR CAR" is not the one we are currently building. That car is the one that me and two other guys started to rebuild last year and had planned to use for this year, but too many rule changes are not allowing us to. We are in the process of designing a completely new frame, suspension, drivetrain, etc. We already have a solid design that we will most likely stick with and build.

Yeah, the CVT is a good idea. On the OUR CAR there is a two forward speed/reverse tranny with a CVT. Theoretically the car was supposed to get to 45-55 mph with the 10hp motor. Rules stipulate that the motor has to be governed to a max of 3600rpm. An average top speed of the cars is usually around 30mph.

We are not limited to where the gearbox goes, but we would like to keep a good center of gravity by keeping it low and towards the center of the car. We weren't able to attain the last year due to some mishaps.

Our expenditures are limited to how much money we can raise by sponsorships. We are working as a team right now to develop a proposal to send out to companies and corporations for sponsorships.

The gearbox doesn't matter for what it was originally intended for. We have seen Polaris gearboxes, atv's, homemade, etc.

I hope that helps.
