Tranny pickle! 200-4r or 700r4

I had a powerglide in my last v8 powered RX-7 and while it was a blast at the track, cruising was definitely a pain. The rear ends are fairly limited in the RX-7s ranging from 3.90 to 4.33 ratios... so short of doing a rear end swap, I'm pretty limited in gearing. As much as I loved the Glide, I've decided I am going with an OD tranny on my next build up. I've heard mixed reviews on the 700r4 but they are pretty common. The 200-4r seems to hold up quite well in the Buick GN so I figured they must be pretty robust but they are tough to find in comparison to the 700. Which tranny has better gearing for a 2600 pound car? Just lookin for some opinions on which route would be best. Thanks in advance..

The 200 4r has a 2.74 1st gear which is probably better than the 700r4's 3.06 in your light car with high gearing. Overdrive is a little better with a .67 on the 200-4r to the 700-4r's .70.
The driveshaft length should be the same on the powerglide, short 350 and the 200-4r. The crossmember may have to be moved. I'm sure you already know that you will have to deal with the TV cable and converter lock-up. Both are simple and there is plenty of info on the web. Try bowtieoverdrives. Any 200-4r coud use hardened pump rings, a hardened stator, some larger boost valves, a good 1/2 servo from a Grand National or from aftermarket and a good shift kit. should be able to get all this for less than $300. The trans should live a long life in a 2600 lb car with these mods if not abused and fluid is kept from overheating.

I would go with the 200R4. It's a bolt-in replacement for the PG. You just need to move the trans crossmember back about 4". The 700R4 requires a different length driveshaft.

Just be aware that all 200R4s are not alike. A lot were used behind Olds 307s and are slush buckets. If you can, find one from a Monte SS or a Buick GN.

Agreed... light car, plenty of torque, low rear gearing... that all adds up to 200-4r.

Thats what I've been leaning towards. Just wanted a second opinion. I had an 87 Regal with a metric 200.... what a piece that tranny was.

The ring and pinion on a 80 ish Ford Courier pick up and a old Mazda 626 RWD sedan is the same as the ring and pinion on a 1st gen Rx7. Get a 3.30:1 ratio. Happy cruising. No OD trans required.

Wow thanks for the info... I don't know how I missed that. I have heard about the 626 rear, but not the courier pickup. Well.... looks like the Glide is still an option.
