Question Tranny Rebuild Questions

I have several questions that maybe you guys can answer for me. My son wants to rebuild a tranny that he got from a friend (Don't know the history). The tranny is a '83 TH700. He was told by some one that this old unit has a 7 vane pump and that if he wants a dependable unit he needs to put in a ten vane from an newer unit. Does anyone know if this is just a swap or are there differances in bolt patterns and oil passagways?
My thought is just start with a newer unit but he thinks he can find just a pump and he won't have to get a new unit.
Thanks, I am sure I will have more questions later.

It's a swap-it lessens oil pressure variation-it's not the critical, "I need it" item like you may be thinking. Careful and critical parts assessment upon disassmbly is more important. Same as the higher clutchpack count-the high clutch count packs are much thinner, and more likley to warp under heat-buy a th700 tranny book-it's a hotrod book, found at barnes and noble, summit, etc. For "shift kit" components, use transgo.
