tranny shaft?

Good morning everyone. I have an 05 taurus I pulled the tranny out of . I found the small spline in the torque converter stripped out, as this is a common problem for these. I am not a tranny person. Are all the shafts coming out from the pump supposed to move freely by hand? The biggest one doesn't move at all. Thank you for any info in advance.

Just about everyone I know including my next door neighbor lady has had the same problem with the ford Taurus or mercury sable. Ford though that since these are not powerful cars, they didn't need those parts heat treated and saved money. Now when you have it rebuilt, your going to have to replace the torque convertor as well. The widow lady next door had it just give out in her driveway. Her son works here at our local Chevrolet dealership. She bought a new Chevrolet because her son told her not to fix it because it would be a few years and it would go out again. The replacement part are no better than the originals. The small end does move a little and the big end you called it, doesn't move. It's solid.

Better let you know that you'll have to rebuild the tranny no matter what because all that fine metal particles are going to be everywhere. It may be better to buy a used tranny. But check those splines yourself to make sure its ok. If you do that, make sure you flush all your cooling lines and cooler to get those particles out. Sorry, my mistake, you need to do that no matter which way you go.
