tranny suddenly stopped shifting to 3rd. feels like it go into neutral
shifting fine that morning. when i left work that evening it shifted fine. than when i stoped and heading up the brigde it shifted 1 and 2 but when it went to 3 it felt like it went to neutral. it gave no worning. it was 2 quarts low on fluid. is it burn up or could something else be wrong.

How was it after you added the missing atf?
Did the atf smell burnt?

Why can you guys not provide more info, whats is it in? how old is it, do you know what type of transmission you have? it really helps us answer the question alot faster than trying to guess what you have.

2003 gmc sierria z71
its a 03 gmc z71 with the 4l60e. i also found out that it has been rebuilt twice within the last 3 years. do u have anyway idea why it has to b swapped out with another 03 model. is there anuway to modify an 02 tranny were it will work.

adding fuild had no effect. it has lost a little of the red tint and has a little burnt smell

Looks like your going to be working on the transmission.
For starters why don't you drop the pan and see if there is anything obvious? If you find lots of clutch material or anything else that does not belong in the pan, start looking for another trans or plan on fixing the one you have. If the trans has been rebuilt twice already there is probably some problem in the valve body causing repeated failures. Sorry for you bad luck.

check the pink wire for power,
when the ign switch is starting to fail, it loose power to the pink wire in the trans connector and the trans goes into limp home mode, 1+2 no 3 or o/d more trans get rebuilt because of this..

Before you burn it up any worse by driving it take it to a shop so they can run a code check on it,that will tell you a lot better than us guessing at it.Usually when a 700R4 or 4L60e computer version loses 3 & 4th gear it means the 3-4 clutch pack is fried,it's probably overhaul time

As I mentioned in another post by this member, there are wire harness and PCS mhz rating differences from 2002 to 2003 trans design. A DIY can not switch the valve bodys , there are items to watch and check. You can switch the harness and PCS between valve bodys
