Tranny swap/ rearend swap?

I've got a 23' bucket and dad and I are wanting to swap out the 3spd manny for a powerglide. I am wondering what all I am going to have to get and modify to do so. How much larger is the Powerglide tranny vs. the manual? How much body/floorpan/firewall work will I need to do? I'm kind of a novice at this as I did not build this car. It's from the 60's so I'm ready to update.

Also Dad thinks the rearend is a 2.78 or something like that. With the manual tranny in it, you gotta slip the clutch pretty good to get moving. It's not too bad, I'd just like maybe a 3.55 or maybe a 4.10 gear for it. Is there a place to go and inquire about some gears or rearends?

Thanks Ryan

Ryan,

We need some more info - i.e. what brand rear end - often a Ford 8", but.....

What brand of body and chassis? Total Performance, Speedway OEM, or .... ???

Why not install a 4 spd manual OD if you are already set up for manual. Also, a 2 speed 'glide ain't the best choice of auto when there are so many great OD autos with more forward gear choices then the 2 speed 'glide which needs many $$ and work to be a reliable street transmission.

The rearend is a factory GM out of a early 60's bel-air I believe. Thought about the 4 spd but it's the cramped area. Dad is really thinkin about the auto to get rid of the clutch. Might try to find a good muncie 4spd or something similar. Chassis is cutsom made from plans from Hot Rod Magazine in the 60's I believe.
