Tranny - transfer case grinding question

Hello I have a 4wd that when it is running I cant shift the 4wd from low to high or anything. All I get is gear grinding. Sounds like as if your were trying to put a standard trans. in gear with no clutch engaged. I have the instection cover off of the floor and when I shut off the truck I can hear the transmission spinning for a couple of seconds. I should note that I cant put the trans in park when it's running either. Any suggestions? Also I should note that the fluid is down a little . I dont think that should have an effect like that but who knows???

re: Tranny - transfer case grinding question

More info needed.

If it's like my 205 transfer case with auto trans; it would do all that if the T-case was in neutral.

With motor off, and in park, can you shift the T-case into gear??

Give us a clue of the vehicle.

If the transmission is not in park , then the transfer case gears are turning if the engine is running.
