which trans in 1998 GM 1/2 ton 4.3 2wd

i recently purchased a 98 chevy 1/2 ton p/u it has no transmission in the vehicle im trying to buy a used one put am not sure what the truck originally came with any ideas 98 1/2 ton 4.3ltr 2wd so far ive told only 2 were available 4l60e and 4l80e is this trew and how can i tell by looking at the truck which one i need remember i dont have the original

I edited the thread title so folks know what the subject matter inside is

Do you have the drive shaft? A 27 spline yoke is for a 4L60E

Then you need to determine if it is a 3 piece case or two piece case.

Alternatively one could call gm(dealer parts counter) with the vin at hand and have them run it for you. They can tell you what it had. My guess would be the 4l60e unless its a 3/4ton truck.

I would have a hard time believing that truck came with anything other than a 4L60E, I can't imagine an 80E behind a 4.3 liter V6, and what else was offered in automatic in that truck for that year? nothing.

The VIN will not tell ANYTHING about the transmission, but you can bet your rearend the RPO tag will have the code telling the dealer EVERYTHING about the truck.
