Trans/converter question

350 engine with a turbo 350, I had starter problems so I bought a mini starter and found some bad teeth on the flexplate so I figured Id change it too. When I removed the flexplate/stall converter bolts I had about 1/8 clearance and could "freewheel" the stall converter easily although you could see where the flywheel/crankshaft bolts where just touching the converter . I have never had any problems with this trans so I would assume the converter was in all the way. The converter is a 10" made locally by a place that has a lot of local drag racers using their product. Anyway, my old flexplate was a B&M and my new one was a Jegster. I removed all the trans bolts and slid the trans back about 4 inches and changed the flexplate. After I bolted the trans back onto the engine the converter was tight against the flexplate, I could move it by hand but it wasnt easy, I never moved the converter while the trans was back so it should of remained seated.

If it had moved out a step wouldnt it of been way out too far for me to even get the tranny bolted on?

I bolted the plate to the converter and everything seems to be working fine.

Am I worrying over nothing or ????

Thanks, Jeffrey

you are fine

You said it was against the flex plate but you could turn it by hand. As long as it wasn't binding your ok.

Thats not correct. Your torque convertor is suppose to have an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch of play between it and the flexplate when un bolted and you push it into the trans as you did prior to rmoving the first flexplate. This is to ensure that when you bolt it up that it comes out alittle. That gap is there to ensure that you have room so that the convertor can move back and forth to compensate for crankshaft endplay, input shaft endplay, etc. If thier is no gap when you installed the flexplate then it was installed wrong or your convertor wasnt seated. It may be working now but it will result in premature damage to your transmission if you dont correct it.
