Trans cooler mounting question

Ok gents, here's the deal.:

I'm currently having the trans in my '97 Suburban rebuilt , and am installing a new, larger auxiliary trans cooler to help the poor 4L60E live a bit longer. I bought a B&M 70266, which with a few bracket modifications will bolt in place of the factory aux cooler. The issue is the B&M says not to mount their cooler with the ports pointing downward, which is exactly how GM mounted the factory cooler. Who is correct? They are both stacked plate coolers, just the B&M is 3" taller. Is GM's mounting scheme wrong, and if so, why?
