There is no doubt a trans jack is the way to go, But i don't know how much money he has to spend and he probably already has a floor jack i assume.
And i have dropped a few myself with a floor jack and that's why i said to have a friend help. Sure if you have the funds and need a trans jack get one or rent one, still either way a friend present would be a good thing.JMO

thats about what i have, ive got two jacks, a cheap parts store one with a plate about the same size welded to the foot/pad,
and a newer one from costco
and half the time we just use the cheap one with the plate for jacking up cars, you just work around it, and never take it off

That's how I did my tranny - used my little 2T $19 trolley jack, welded on some angle iron and a couple of plates but have since put it back to normal though. If my HF does as well as that one, bought in 1987 and abused regularly, I'll be very happy.

Like others have said you can use a Floor Jack, but it can be tricky. I would recommend a Tran Adapter as well. It would be safer and much easier. You can still use the HF 20% Off Coupons on Trans Adapters.

Trans adapter requires jack w/ removable saddle.
Sits in hole about 1" diameter?
Keep in mind that you will have to raise your car very high w/ adapter.

trans jack

The good ones have a tilt for side to side and front to back. back in the day, I used to stack 40 tons of hay bales every day all summer long, I used to lay under the old ford and pull a T 85 overdrive and then roll it off my chest. after being gone from the ranch for 10 years I tried it again and the trans was chrushing my chest. I could hardly breathe. It was time for a good trans jack.

Don't remind me of days when I could do that - heck I can hardly lift myself from my Lazy-Boy and the newspaper some days. I should pull the leaky C4 out of my '31 and haven't figured out how to lift it without buying a jack ......... inspiration (or a trans jack) will eventually arrive
